Pirate News: Pirate Ships Galore

Thank goodness Australians living near the POTC5 set are posting photos of it on Twitter;  otherwise I would have nothing to blog about.

Recently a couple of set photos showed up on Twitter.  They are of various boats.  Check it out,

You know what's particularly crazy about this?  I can't for certain say that we've seen any of these ships before.  I guess that third one might be the same one we got pictures of exactly one month ago; but I honestly doubt it.  It doesn't look right.

The second picture is clearly some sort of wrecked ship.  The victims of Salazar perhaps?  What it reminds me of most is the wrecked-ship from Dead Man's Chest that Will Turner mistakes for the Flying Dutchman.  It definitely has a similar color scheme, but I doubt there is any relation.

Arguably the most interesting of the three photos is the first; for two reasons.  Firstly:  We get to see part of the flag that the ship is sailing under; and it gives us a few hints as to the nature of the vessel.  That flag has a bird and/or griffin with a crest on it. that much is clear.  And the crest has a castle and some sort of lion on the front of it.  A casual search of the internet revealed no clues as to what country or group this flag could represent;  it looks almost like a combination of a bunch of flags.

The second point of interest in the first picture is the sailors on the ship.  They're clearly wearing matching uniforms, which tells us that they're probably part of some sort of military;  AKA not pirates.  They're also clearly not members of the British military; so that's unique.

As much as I love getting more shots from the set, I'm hoping that some juicier info from the movie comes out soon.  I'm dying to know what's going to happen.

Pirate News: First Look at Jack Sparrow in POTC5!

Not much to say about this one.  The other day Jerry Bruckheimer, Pirates of the Caribbean's producer, posted the below picture of Jack Sparrow on Twitter.

View image on Twitter

This isn't much, but it's good to get our first look at the new pirate flick.  In this image Sparrow is being tied up by two pirates of unknown origin or intent.  Are they some of Salazar's ghost pirates?  I doubt it.  It has been hinted at that those characters might be CGI; and even if they aren't, I'd hope that their design would be more menacing than this.  These Buccaneers look more like a neutral party.

Also;  notice the black sails and dark floorboards.  This appears to be taking place on The Black Pearl herself! Has Jack run afowl of his own crew?  Or maybe this is an invading party?  It's possible that a third party has taken control of the Pearl.

And is it me or is that rope coming from some odd place off screen?  Could it be that this is the doing of Barbossa and the magical sword he stole from Blackbeard?

Rampant Speculation aside;  I really love how this picture looks.  Those aforementioned buccaneers look like they came right out of the original Disneyland attraction, which is nothing but a good thing in my book.  Occasionally the POTC movies suffer a bit from not being quite pirate-y enough, but from the looks of things that won't be a problem in Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales!

Pirate News: What the Heck is a Lazaro?

Check it out pirates fans!  New set photos of an unknown vessel sailing the deep-blue screen!

Also, check out this shoot plan of what may or may not be the same boat from the above photos.  It features a sequence where Salazar discovers Jack Sparrow hiding on said boat, and speaks reference to something called Lazaro.

What is Lazaro?  Could it be the name of Salazar's ship?  Could it be the name of a new Pirate character?  Could the Disney marketing machine just be screwing with us?  I don't know for certain.

It does appear, upon closer inspection that Lazaro is actually a person, or person like character.  We'll probably find out more as production continues (and as Joachim Ronning continues to tweet and Instagram haphazardly.)

Pirate News: New POTC5 Set Photo and Casting Call

Just the other day Joachim Ronning, one of the directors for the new Pirates film currently filming, posted this rather intriguing photograph on his Twitter.  Check it out.

There isn't a whole lot one can gleam from this photograph, but there is some.  The image was posted with the message and hashtags "On your marks #pirates5 #jerrybruckheimerfilms #disney #australia;" which implies to us that those little pieces of tape are markers telling the various actors where to walk during the shooting.  Whatever they're filming requires a lot of people moving in sinc in order for it to work.  Those are a lot of tape marks.

Another thing that I think is fairly obvious is that that this is clearly being filmed on, what is supposed to be, the deck of a ship.  I have no Idea what ship it is, it doesn't look like The Black Pearl.  Plus there is some kind of creepy light emenating from the ships hull through those grates.  Could this be Captain Salazar's vessel we're looking at?

Arguably the most exciting thing you might notice in the photo, is the garb of the people in shot.  Several of the people are wearing unexciting standard pirate stuff, complete with sword-sheaths and boots.  On these people there isn't anything there that gives away who they might be, other than pirates.  The rest of the characters, however, are wearing a strange grey, black and white outfit that might look familiar to anyone who's seen behind-the-scenes photos of the other pirate films.  Compare them to this set picture of Bill Nighy, the actor behind Davy Jones.

That's right!  It looks as if there are going to be even more Davy-Jones-type CGI characters in POTC5!  I'm super excited, and my brain is going wild with speculation.  Is Davy Jones and his crew back?  Is that Will Turner with a new version of the crew? or, more likely, are these Captain Salazar's ghost pirates?  Davy Jones is still one of the most impressive CGI effects in movie history, I can't wait to see how the technology has improved.

In slightly less interesting news, there has been an Australian casting call for women with large breasts to play bit parts in POTC5.  This information is more amusing than it is informative; but it still implies some possible plot threads for the film.  Is it possible that Jack Sparrow and company will be returning to the port of Tortuga for some salty (Australian) wenches?  That seems the most likely reason for this casting call.  But who knows? Captains Salazar's ghost crew could consist of busty female ghosts.

The news trickle coming out of POTC5 has been obnoxiously slow.  apparently Johnny Depp has injured his hand, and that is slowing down production as well as the info leaking out of production.  With a little luck I'll be able to fill another Pirate New sooner rather than later.

“This is Aztec gold. One of 882 identical pieces they delivered in a stone chest to Cortez himself. Blood money paid to stem the slaughter he wreaked upon them with his armies. But the greed of Cortez was insatiable. So the heathen gods placed upon the gold a terrible curse. Any mortal that removes but a piece from that stone chest shall be punished for eternity.” – Captain Barbossa

Pirate News: Pirates 5 Begins Shooting, brings in more cast, and an Official Synopsis is Released!

The Pirate News treasure trove was ripe for plundering recently as a whole bunch of new information has come about about the upcoming Pirates of the Caribbean 5, which just started shooting in Australia.

Firstly, Disney has finally released an official synopsis of the film.  Check it out:

"Thrust into an all-new adventure, a down-on-his-luck Captain Jack Sparrow finds the winds of ill-fortune blowing even more strongly when deadly ghost pirates led by his old nemesis, the terrifying Captain Salazar (Javier Bardem), escape from the Devil's Triangle, determined to kill every pirate at sea...including him. Captain Jack's only hope of survival lies in seeking out the legendary Trident of Poseidon, a powerful artifact that bestows upon its possessor total control over the seas."

It sounds like Javier Bardem is going to be the villain after-all (I hadn't heard anything official, so I was beginning to have my doubts.)  On top of that, it looks like his character will be called Captain Salazar, and will be a ghost from the Bermuda Triangle.  I'm not sure we need another undead Pirate villain in the Pirate-verse, but Bardem will probably do something unique with the character.  I'm going to remain optimistic.

It also is noted that Poseidon's Trident will be the new treasure/magical artifact that heroes and villains alike strive for in the new picture.  It apparently has the power to control the sea;  but doesn't Calipso/Tia Dalma do that?  Didn't the Kraken give Davy Jones the ability to rule the sea?  how many different ways are there to become king of the ocean anyways?  Oh-well;  It'll be fun regardless.

Also in Pirate news there were a few new casting announcements made.  The following actors are officially in the new Pirates of the Caribbean:

Delroy Atkinson - No Idea
Danny Kirrane - No Idea
Adam Brown - No Idea
Johnny Depp - Jack sparrow
Kaya Scodelario - Some kind of female lead
Brenton Thwaites - Some kind of male lead;  Will Turners son?
Martin Klebba - Marty
Golshifteh Farahani - No Idea
Geoffrey Rush - Barbossa
Javier Bardem - Captain Salazar
Kevin R. McNally - Joshamee Gibbs
Stephen Graham - Scrum

I think it's great that Martin Klebba is reprising his role from the first three movies.  I hope he isn't the only secondary character that makes a re-appearance.  I also think it's really cool that Scrum from On Stranger Tides is coming back;  probably as part of Barbossa's crew on the Queen Anne's Revenge.

For a good number of the cast, I have no idea what to think.  It has been hinted at heavily that Brenton Thwaites will be playing Will Turner and Elizabeth Swann's son, but that has yet to be confirmed.  There are also a bunch of rumors running around that Orlando Bloom will be making a return to the franchise;  and I really hope that's true.

As Pirates 5 pre-production has been underway we've gotten plenty of set footage; and now that the movie has begun production, that trend shows no sign of slowing.  Check out these new set photos, the last of our pirate news.

Pirate News: More Potc5 Set Photos

Remember those Pirates of the Caribbean 5 set photos that were leaked earlier this month?  Well just the other day comingsoon.net sent out a new batch of photos from the same Australian set still under sonstruction.

The set is definitely looking more and more like an ol' timey town.  They don't really tell us any more about the film then the original photos did, but it's still cool to see how the thing is progressing.  Check out all the new photos below.

I really like the look of some of these near-finished buildings.  This place is definitely starting to get an Adventureland/Caribbean plaza look to it which I really like.  These new set photos may not give is much to speculate on; but it's reassuring to know that Disney is so confident going forward that  they're building elaborate sets this early before shooting.
